European Elections 2009

The recent European elections have resulted in a bigger shift of the political parameters within the European Parliament than expected. To what extent this will translate into different dynamics in the individual political groups or parliamentary committees, can only be fully assessed once the constitutive phase will be over and the new Parliament will have taken up its work.

Taking a closer look at which members of some of the key parliamentary committees will return and which will not, however, will already give a better idea of the extent of the changes in the dynamics that can be expected in these committees. At www.webershandwick.be you will find our European Elections ‘09 Update and MEP Tracker that provide an overview of the turnover status for each of the following key committees: International Trade (INTA); Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI); Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE); Transport and Tourism (TRAN); Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI). As the majority of the Members of the European Parliament tend to return to those committees that they have previously been a member of, this resource will be useful to you in assessing the extent to which you will need to rebuild your contact network within the European Parliament in the coming months.

With Sweden in the spotlight for the months ahead, taking over the EU Presidency in July, you will also find an analysis of the EP elections results in Sweden provided by our Public Affairs director at Weber Shandwick in Stockholm, Henrik Sjöholm.
